What is CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is the average of grade points obtained in the five main subjects, calculated on a 10-point grading scale.

CBSE Grading System 2025

According to the CBSE grading system:

  • Students getting grades E1 or E2 need to appear for compartment exams

How to Calculate CGPA from Grade Points?

Let’s say your subject-wise grade points are:

  • English – 9
  • Hindi – 8.5
  • Math – 10
  • Science – 9.5
  • Social Science – 9

Now, add these grade points:

 9 + 8.5 + 10 + 9.5 + 9 = 46

Then divide the total by 5:

 46 ÷ 5 = 9.2

So, your CGPA is 9.2.

How to Convert CGPA into Percentage?

To convert CGPA to percentage, CBSE uses a simple formula, Standard Formula (10-point scale):

Percentage = CGPA x 9.5

So if your CGPA is 9.2:

9.2 x 9.5 = 87.4

Your percentage is 87.4%.

Why Multiply by 9.5?

CBSE studied the marks of students over the years and found that those who scored between 91 to 100 marks (Grade A1) had an average score of 95.

Since A1 equals 10 grade points, 95 ÷ 10 = 9.5. That’s how the multiplier was decided.
