How to Convert CBSE CGPA into Percentage for Class 12

The CBSE Class 12 results are expected to be announced in the second week of May, and many students are eagerly waiting to see how they performed. But once the results are out, a common question arises: How do I convert my CGPA into percentage?

If you’re confused about the CGPA system and how it translates to your actual percentage, especially for college admissions, scholarships, or job applications, you’re not alone. To make things easier, we’ve created a simple guide and a free CGPA to Percentage Calculator to help you understand the conversion process and the CBSE grading system clearly.

What is CGPA in CBSE?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is the average of your grade points across the five main subjects (excluding the 6th optional subject). The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) uses CGPA to show a student’s performance instead of giving raw marks.

Your CGPA will be clearly mentioned on your CBSE marksheet.

How to Calculate CGPA?

Here’s a quick example to help you understand how CGPA is calculated:

Step-by-step:

  • Suppose these are your Grade Points in five main subjects:
    • Subject 1: 9
    • Subject 2: 8
    • Subject 3: 7
    • Subject 4: 8
    • Subject 5: 8

Step 1: Add all the grade points
 9 + 8 + 7 + 8 + 8 = 40

Step 2: Divide the total by 5
 40 ÷ 5 = 8

So, your CGPA is 8.0

How to Convert CGPA to Percentage?

Once you know your CGPA, converting it to percentage is easy. Just multiply it by 9.5.

Formula:

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

Example:

If your CGPA is 8.0:

8.0 × 9.5 = 76%

So, your final percentage is 76%

Subject-wise CGPA to Percentage Calculation

If you want to know the percentage for individual CBSE subjects, multiply the grade point (GP) of that subject by 9.5.

Example:

Math GP = 9

9 × 9.5 = 85.5%
