Kerala Offers Grace Marks for Reading from Next Academic Year – A Step Towards a Reading Culture

Kerala’s General Education Minister V. Sivankutty has announced an exciting new initiative for school students. Starting from the next academic year, children in state-run schools will earn grace marks for reading.
This policy aims to encourage students to read more books and newspapers, improve their language skills, and build a lifelong love for reading.
Under this plan, a dedicated reading period will be introduced every week, supported by trained teachers and structured activities. The initiative is part of Kerala’s larger vision to strengthen literacy, language proficiency, and overall quality of education.
How the program will work for different classes:
Grade Level | Activity | Benefit |
Classes 1 to 4 | Weekly reading sessions focused on storybooks, children’s literature, and other age-appropriate materials. | Builds early reading habits and improves vocabulary. |
Classes 5 to 12 | Newspaper reading and related activities like summarizing, discussions, and follow-up exercises. | Enhances comprehension, critical thinking, and general knowledge. |
Grace Marks | Awarded to students who actively participate in these reading activities. | Adds extra marks to academic scores and motivates consistent reading. |
This reading grace marks policy will benefit students in multiple ways:
Academic Benefits
Personal Development
Teachers will play a key role in making this program a success. They will:
Kerala has a rich literary culture and a long history of celebrating books. The proposal to include a reading-based segment in the famous Kalolsavam arts festival could make reading a celebrated activity alongside music, dance, and drama. This will inspire more students to see reading as a cultural and enjoyable part of life.
Grace marks can be a strong motivation for students. When they know that reading books and newspapers can improve their final scores, they are more likely to make it a regular habit. This not only helps in academics but also develops well-rounded personalities who are informed, confident, and articulate.
