Learn Vedic Mathematics Methods Easily and Effectively

Math is often seen as difficult, confusing, and sometimes even scary. But what if we told you that there’s an ancient Indian system that can make math feel like a game? Yes, that’s Vedic Maths – a collection of powerful mental math techniques that make solving problems faster and easier.

In this guide, we’ll explore the types of Vedic maths methods, how they work, and why students and even parents are turning to them for a smoother math journey.

What is Vedic Maths?

Vedic Maths is a system of mathematics that comes from the ancient Indian scriptures called the Vedas. It was rediscovered in the early 20th century by Swami Bharati Krishna Tirthaji, who found 16 sutras (formulas) and 13 sub-sutras (sub-formulas) that could solve complex math problems quickly and easily.

These sutras cover various math areas like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, algebra, and even geometry.

Types of Vedic Maths Methods

Let’s see a breakdown of the main types of Vedic mathematics methods, based on the core mathematical operations they simplify.

Type of Method

Description

Addition TechniquesSimple tricks to add numbers mentally, even large ones
Subtraction TechniquesFast methods for borrowing and subtraction from left to right
Multiplication TricksUnique methods to multiply numbers in one line
Division MethodsQuick steps to divide numbers, even big ones, without long division steps
Squares and CubesSpecial formulas to find squares/cubes mentally
Algebraic ShortcutsFormulas for solving equations and algebra expressions
Digital Roots & CheckingTechniques to verify answers using Vedic digit checking

Popular Vedic Maths Methods Explained

Let’s go through some of the most common types of Vedic maths methods with simple examples:

1.Vertically and Crosswise (Multiplication)

This method allows you to multiply numbers of any size mentally.

Example:
Multiply 12 × 13 using vertically and crosswise:

  • Step 1: 1×1 = 1
  • Step 2: Cross-multiply (1×3 + 2×1) = 3 + 2 = 5
  • Step 3: 2×3 = 6
  • Final Answer: 156

All from 9 and the Last from 10 (Subtraction)

Used when subtracting from powers of 10, like 1000 or 10000.

Example:
1000 − 483

  • Subtract 4 from 9 = 5
  • Subtract 8 from 9 = 1
  • Subtract 3 from 10 = 7
  • Final Answer: 517

Nikhilam Sutra (Multiplication Near Base Numbers)

Ideal for numbers near 10, 100, 1000, etc.

Example:
98 × 99(both near 100)

  • Base = 100, Deficiencies: 100−98=2, 100−99=1
  • Step 1: Subtract crosswise: 98−1 = 97
  • Step 2: Multiply deficiencies: 2×1 = 02
  • Final Answer: 9702
